Verdict of 18 Years in Prison for Killer of Journalist, KJJT Appreciates Law Compliance

Verdict of 18 Years in Prison for Killer of Journalist

Suarapecari.com Jombang, February 1, 2024 – In a significant development, the murderer of journalist Muhammad Sapto Sugiyono, identified as Muhammad Hasan Syafi’i, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison. The verdict, delivered by the Jombang District Court, found the defendant guilty under Article 340 of the Indonesian Criminal Code, having deliberately taken the life of the 46-year-old journalist in September 2023, using an air rifle and a hammer.

The sentencing has received commendation from Krisna Hari Sukemi, ST, the Advisor of the Journalists Community of East Java (KJJT) in the Jombang region. Krisna praised the coherence between the prosecution’s demand and the judge’s decision, both aligning at an 18-year prison term. This alignment reflects the successful presentation of evidence by the prosecutor, convincing the judges of the planned murder under Article 340 of the Criminal Code.

“This is a positive outcome where the demand from the prosecutor and the judge’s verdict are consistent. It’s a clear message that the legal process has been thorough and effective,” commented Krisna, a senior journalist from TVRI East Java.

Interestingly, the verdict coincides with the month of February, marking the National Press Day (Hari Pers Nasional or HPN). Krisna sees this as an opportune moment for all parties to reflect on the significance of respecting journalists, regardless of personal or institutional issues. He emphasizes the need for communicative dialogue and prioritizing humane values in resolving conflicts.

“Regardless of personal or institutional issues, the loss of any life, especially a journalist’s, is a humanitarian tragedy. The 18-year sentence for Sapto’s murderer is fitting, and it coincidentally aligns with National Press Day in February. Let’s use this moment to foster mutual respect and effective communication,” Krisna urged, having recently received a reward of a smartphone during the HPN (National Press Day) 2024 event in Mojokerto.

In the spirit of National Press Day, the Chairman of KJJT in the Jombang region added his hopes that such tragic incidents do not recur, especially affecting fellow journalists. He conveyed the central directive to unite and express solidarity in appreciation of the judiciary’s and prosecutor’s efforts.

“Today, KJJT representatives in Jombang will present flower arrangements as a token of gratitude and appreciation to the judges and prosecutor. May such incidents not happen again, especially not to our fellow journalists,” he declared.

He further stressed the importance of resolving personal issues within the framework of familial harmony, urging mutual support and understanding in various environments, including work and friendships.

“Let’s prioritize fostering harmonious ecosystems in our cultural and ethical lives,” concluded Ditha Asih Aprillia on February 1, 2024.
