Gus Ipul and Luhut took the time to stop at Gombengsari Coffee Village

BANYUWANGI — Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf, known as Gus Ipul, alongside Chairman of the Government Digital Transformation Acceleration Committee Luhut Binsar Panjaitan and representatives from 20 ministries/agencies, reviewed the progress of the pilot digitalization of the national social assistance program in Banyuwangi on Thursday, October 2, 2025.

During their visit, the ministers took time to stop at Kampung Kopi Gombengsari in Kalipuro District, a region recognized for its certified robusta and lanang coffee with Geographical Indication (IG) certification.

Accompanied by Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani, Gus Ipul and Luhut enjoyed sipping the village’s famous robusta coffee. “The coffee is excellent,” Luhut remarked after tasting the lanang robusta.

The officials also observed the traditional coffee processing methods employed by local farmers — from roasting the beans, pounding, to sieving them into fine coffee powder ready for brewing.

They had a chance to view various Banyuwangi coffee products from local MSMEs on display, expressing admiration for the attractive packaging and branding. Regent Ipuk noted, “The branding is already impressive.”

Luhut highlighted Banyuwangi’s vast potential in coffee development. Plans are underway for research activities and the establishment of a coffee development laboratory in the area. “The ecosystem here is already formed, which is very important. We will conduct coffee research here and plan to build a development laboratory in Banyuwangi,” he said.

Regent Ipuk added that Gombengsari is among Banyuwangi’s prime coffee-producing villages, with approximately 600 hectares under community cultivation. The agricultural ecosystem integrates farming and livestock, adding sustainability. Manure from livestock is processed into organic fertilizer to enrich the coffee plants.

Haryono, Chairman of the Gombengsari Farmers Group, emphasized the village’s significant coffee production potential, yielding 1-2 tons per hectare. Government support has shifted coffee prices from as low as IDR 18,000-20,000 to an improved range of IDR 70,000-80,000 per kilogram, benefiting farmers affiliated with the Geographical Indication Protection Society (MPIG).

Not far from the coffee village, the delegation visited a local goat dairy farm, sampling fresh Etawa goat milk produced by community livestock farmers.
